Review #062 – Call of the Elder Gods
It pains me to say but Elder Gods is a step back from Call of the Sea. Moving from a singular island setting to multiple bespoke locations feels less tidy, and the narrative occasionally devolves into an inscrutable tangle. The dual protagonist swapping mechanic is under baked, too.
Puzzles are still the game’s biggest strength and the majority of them are well designed and fun to solve. However, some get a little too detail-heavy for my liking—there’s one midway through the story that never made sense to me even after using up all the available hints.
It looks fairly nice with surprisingly great optimization, so props to both the art and graphics teams. I couldn’t help but be disappointed by its strange plot and lack of core setting, though. I hope the inevitable third game gets the series back on even footing, but I’m also not entirely convinced the series’ current trajectory will be worth seeing through. I guess we’ll see.
