Review #060 – Mouse: P.I. For Hire
Bleu detective.
The moment Mouse was announced I was excited to see how the slick 1930s cartoon animation gelled with its Doom-style first-person shooter gameplay. Having now finished the game myself I can definitely say that it’s a fun escapade and worth seeing in motion, but the noire aesthetic and bombastic action can feel discordant at times.
It runs into the same problems as something like Uncharted where the main relatively ordinary detective character is just mass murdering hundreds of people (or in this case, cartoon mice). The murdering is fun and frantic, don’t get me wrong, but it’s a weird disconnect.
Narrative issues aside I think both the shooting and level design are pretty good. I’m glad the campaign isn’t any longer though because it starts to get a little stale by the end. But I never got over just how cool the game looks, and the stellar presentation might be worth the price of admission alone.
