Review #003 – Castlevania Dominus Collection

Is this Castlevania DS collection a Domi-bust?

Review #003 – Castlevania Dominus Collection

The DS Castlevania games were awesome back in the day and it’s really nice having them available on modern consoles. Dawn of Sorrow is my favourite of the three with its big, Symphony-style map, but Portrait of Ruin is also very good despite having smaller, weaker zones. Order of Ecclesia is fun too but is my least favourite, mostly because it’s much more straightforward and features very little backtracking or exploration.

Being able to make save states and rewind makes these games much more tolerable as they are extremely difficult otherwise. I’d play this compilation on a device like the Switch or Steam Deck because being able to touch the screen is much more intuitive than using the right stick.

Including a remastered version of Haunted Castle is a cool bonus — it’s surprisingly fun, though the port of the old Japanese arcade game doesn’t hold up super well.
