Review #070 – Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy
The first two Plague Tale games are pretty good (Innocence more so than Requiem) but Asobo Studio has really stepped up their game with Resonance. It’s wonderfully cinematic, giving off modern-day Naughty Dog vibes with its captivating story and terrific performances. Shifting the gameplay away from stealth and focussing more on exploration and combat was the way to go too—it’s extremely fun to play.
The jump in quality is very much seen in its level design, with chapters structured to be more open and explored— I lost count how many times I wondered off the beaten path only to discover useful bonuses. I also love the beautifully rendered Ancient Greek architecture—the game is packed with stunning scenery and intense (though sometimes horrifying) set pieces.
The melee-based combat, while not particularly inventive, is brutally fun. I never got tired of booting enemies off of ledges or performing ruthless finishers. And sure, there’s still some forced stealth sections but you’re shuffled through its various gameplay styles often, so nothing ever feels drawn-out. I honestly can’t say enough good things about this game, it’s a must-play.
