Review #056 – Resident Evil Requiem

With Requiem Capcom has ostensibly mashed together both of Resident Evil’s main series and modern remake gameplay styles into one convergent, multi-character escapade. Bouncing from Grace’s tense first person horror-based experience to Leon’s Resident Evil 4 adjacent action-heavy scenarios is such a great idea, and it all blends together exceptionally well.

It’s definitely my favourite of the modern trilogy. Grace is much more interesting than Ethan Winters, and the George Romero-esque zombies are way more engaging to fight than the mold or lycan enemies from previous games. Any time you take control of Leon is great too, feeling like a souped-up version of himself from the Resident Evil 4 remake—his viscerally gruesome axe attacks are especially satisfying to pull off.

The way they’ve integrated the two divergent gameplay philosophies into one coherent campaign, while still being extremely engaging the entire way through, is very well done. I love when Capcom nails a Resident Evil game and they didn’t miss a beat here, nailing not only one, but two gameplay styles at the same time. To me it’s an indisputable must-play.
