Review #046 – Dispatch
Exemplary or displeasing?
I checked out of episodic Telltale-type games a while ago but the positive buzz around Dispatch drew me back in. And after playing through all 8 episodes I can see why people really like this game—it’s quite good!
The story revolves around your character, an Iron Man-adjacent super hero named Mecha Man, and how he finds himself employed as a super hero dispatcher, managing a team of ex-villains. The narrative gets quite intriguing as you progress through each episode, and although things do play out in a typical super hero-y way, I was invested in seeing all the hows and whys.
The dispatching mini game that shows up between animated story sequences (which are very well written and performed I should mention) adds some cool depth to an otherwise gameplay-light game. It’s not super deep or anything, but it’s smartly designed and well integrated into the larger narrative. This, combined with the intriguing plot, fun characters, and stellar animation, results in a great story-driven experience that fans of old Telltale games will definitely enjoy.
