Review #043 – Keeper

Clocking in at only 5 hours in length, playing through Keeper is a great way to spend a lazy weekend afternoon. It doesn't compare to something like Journey exactly one-to-one, but its general structure is similar—a beautiful, style-forward game with artsy vibes, linear progression, and modest puzzle solving.

Double Fine games have always had great aesthetics (remember that PSI King level from Psychonauts 2?) but the artists really cooked here. Everything from the vibrant colour palette, eccentric character & environmental design, and psychedelic-like effects rip so friggin' hard—the game greatly benefits from playing on a high quality display like an OLED.

As a visual showpiece I can't say any particular section grabbed me gameplay-wise. It has very distinct acts and some are decidedly better than others, but everything is engaging enough to never feel outright boring. It's a concise experience too, so it's not like you have to slog through lengthy segments to fully see it through.
