Review #038 – Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4

It’s a decent compilation, but the first two Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater games were adapted into a single package better than 3+4. THPS4 is ostensibly a different game after stripping out the open structure to stay within the mold of the first three games. Rejigging some of 4’s stages to be score-based competitions in the career mode is particularly disappointing.

I had a fun time going through classic levels like Canada, Cruise Ship, and Alcatraz, but these stages don’t carry the same nostalgic weight for me as the Warehouse or Schools from the first two games. Though, I will say the new Water Park and Pinball levels are smart additions.

The other thing I realized—I definitely don’t have as much desire to score chase as I did in my youth. I found myself getting tired of having get a new “Sick Score,” or win another gold medal.  But score chasing digression aside—I don’t think this compilation is a bad game, it just didn’t really tickle my fancy in a way that previous Pro Skater games have. I prefer THPS 1+2 much more.
