Review #001 – Dungeons of Hinterberg
A very fun dungeon run.

Dungeons of Hinterberg is a really cool mix of the Persona-style social link mechanics and the dungeon design of The Legend of Zelda. There’s a few dungeons in particular that are really clever but all 20+ are generally well crafted. Some of my favourites are the ones that change the game’s third-person perspective to an overhead view, ostensibly altering how the game plays.
The ‘dungeon slayer by day and social butterfly by night’ story and gameplay loop is very satisfying. The narrative tackles interesting topics like how Hinterberg is coping with its increased popularity and how the introduction of magic is affecting the community.
You could argue that the combat mechanics are repetitive and one-note and I honestly don’t have a rebuttal, but I got used to it and found it got better the further you progress. I was mostly here for the dungeon design though and they delivered on that front in a really fun, unique way.
